Watch Size Guide for Men and Women

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Watch sizing primarily revolves around the case diameter but also includes factors like case thickness, strap width and length and lug-to-lug distance. By considering all these dimensions together, you can find a watch size that’s the perfect fit for you.

Watch Case Size

Case diameter is the width of the watch face, excluding the crown. It’s the most noticeable dimension and a major factor in determining visual impact. Case diameter is measured in millimeters (mm), and sizes generally fall into the following categories:

  • Small (26-35mm): Delicate and well-suited for smaller wrists, often preferred by women
  • Medium (36-40mm): A versatile size that works well for both men and women
  • Large (41-46mm): Ideal for men with larger wrists or anyone who prefers oversized designs
  • Extra-Large (47mm and above): Commonly associated with sporty or statement timepieces

The average men’s watch case size ranges from 3846mm, while the average women’s watch case size falls between 2638mm.

Case thickness refers to the depth or height of the watch case measured from the back to the top of the crystal. Thicker watches tend to be sportier or more technical (like dive watches), while thinner watches feel dressier and more refined. As a general guide, slim watches measure less than 10mm, mid-sized watches 10–14mm and robust watches over 14mm.

Watch Strap Size

Other features that can affect how a watch’s size is perceived are the length and width of the strap or bracelet. Knowing your wrist measurement before choosing a watch can help you find the most flattering and comfortable fit. To measure your wrist, simply take a flexible measuring tape, wrap it around your wrist just below the wrist bone, mark where the tape meets and note the measurement.

Once you know your wrist size, you can match it with a case size:

  • Wrist size under 6 inches (15 cm): Case diameter of 28-36mm
  • Wrist size 6-7 inches (15-18 cm): Case diameter of 36-40mm
  • Wrist size 7-8 inches (18-20 cm): Case diameter of 40-44mm
  • Wrist size over 8 inches (20+ cm): Case diameter of 44mm and above

Taking your wrist size also helps when picking a strap length. Watch straps come in various lengths to accommodate different wrist sizes and are typically categorized as:

  • Short: Designed for wrists under 6.5 inches
  • Standard: The most common length, fitting wrists between 6.5 to 7.5 inches
  • Long: Made for wrists over 7.5 inches

Strap width is generally proportional to the case diameter (roughly half the size). A wider strap can make the watch appear larger, while a narrow strap softens its visual weight. Your strap must be the correct width to nest securely and snugly between the lugs of the watch case.

Lug-to-lug distance measures the vertical length from one strap attachment to the other. If it extends past your wrist’s edges, the watch may feel too large. Ideal lug-to-lug should match or slightly undercut your wrist width. You can learn more about the parts of a watch in our guide.
