tanzanite gemstone

What Is Tanzanite?

Tanzanite is a rare variety of the common mineral zoisite colored by atoms of strontium. It features a unique, strong characteristic, called pleochroism, which allows tanzanite to show two different colors at the same time. It is found in the ground only in the Merelani Hills near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It naturally occurs in yellow, golden brown, green, blue and purple. This gem was discovered in 1967 and has increased in popularity in part due to its color-changing properties.

Tanzanite Color, Characteristics & Value

Ranging in color from blue to violet, tanzanite is a pleochroic crystal, meaning it changes depending on the light and the direction from which it is viewed. In its original form, dark blue, brown-yellow and red-purple can be seen in the same stone. After cutting, tanzanite is routinely heated to achieve its rich violet-blue color. This treatment is fully accepted in the trade, is permanent and no fading will occur. No special care is needed to keep tanzanite this rich color. In natural light, the purple and violet colors are more apparent. In fluorescent lights, the blues are more evident. Tanzanite is often free of inclusions.

Gem quality tanzanite is rare and the raw pieces are often small. It must be handled and cut with care as it is a brittle crystal.

Tanzanite Care & Cleaning

Tanzanite will easily clean with a gentle solution made specifically for jewelry or warm soapy water. Have your jewelry professionally cleaned and checked three to four times a year. When not worn, tanzanite jewelry should be stored in a jewelry box lined with soft fabric. Never clean your tanzanite with an ultrasonic cleaner.

FAQs

How to Tell If Tanzanite Is Real

Real tanzanite typically shows a rich blueviolet color that can shift slightly depending on the angle (a trait called pleochroism). If it looks overly uniform or glass-like, it may be an imitation. When in doubt, one of our professional jewelers can verify it.

Can Tanzanite Be Lab-Grown?

True tanzanite is not commonly lab-grown for commercial use. Most stones on the market are naturally mined, though some may be imitations or simulants.

How Is Tanzanite Graded and What Does Its Grading Mean?

Tanzanite is graded mainly on color, clarity, cut and carat weight, with color being the most important factor. Deeper, more saturated blue-violet tones are considered higher grade and more valuable.

Which Colors of Tanzanite Are Most Valuable?

The most valuable tanzanite shows a deep, vivid blue with hints of violet.

Is Tanzanite Rare?

Yes, tanzanite is considered rare because it’s found in only one place in the world: Tanzania. This limited source makes it more unique than many other gemstones.

How Much Is Tanzanite Worth?

Tanzanite can range from about $200 to $1,500+ per carat, depending on color, clarity and size. Deep, vivid blue stones are typically more valuable.

Is Tanzanite Expensive?

Tanzanite is more expensive than many common gemstones but often less expensive than diamonds or sapphires. Its price increases with stronger color and higher quality.

Is Tanzanite More Expensive Than Diamond?

Usually, no. Most tanzanite is less expensive than diamonds. However, exceptional large or deeply colored tanzanite can reach higher price points in rare cases.

What Are the Main Differences Between Tanzanite and Sapphire?

Compared to sapphire, tanzanite is typically softer, more affordable and has a more color-shifting appearance, while sapphire is harder and usually stays a consistent blue.

Which Gemstone Is More Valuable: Tanzanite or Amethyst?

Tanzanite is generally more valuable than amethyst due to its rarity and limited geographic source. Amethyst is more widely available and typically more affordable.

What Should I Consider When Choosing Between Tanzanite and Emerald?

Consider durability and look. Tanzanite offers a rich blue-violet color but is softer, while emerald has a classic green color but often includes natural inclusions. Your choice comes down to color preference, lifestyle and how often you plan to wear it.

Tanzanite is a popular gift option for those celebrating December birthdays and those commemorating their 24th wedding anniversary.
